Pray, hope, and don't Worry

Today's saint, Padre Pio, was formed in a farmhouse. The Forgiones of Pietrelcina were peasant farmers who could not read, yet they went to Mass every morning and said the Rosary every night, and by age five the boy growing up in that rhythm had already decided to give his whole life to God. His father went to America to earn the money for the schooling the friars required, and the priest who came out of that sacrifice spent much of his life in a confessional, often ten or twelve hours a day. That is his whole lesson for a family: prayer as ordinary as bread, confession as regular as a haircut. If it has been a while, take the children this week, and let them see you go in first and come out lighter. Our Child's Guide to Confession walks little ones through the sacrament step by step, with prayers and a take-to-confession checklist.

Seek Her Counsel

Are you feeling overwhelmed by a challenging school week? Wondering how to guide a child's heart through a hard stage? Dear Mater takes on questions from CHECH families, drawing on Scripture, the saints, and a lot of lived experience. Here's a question we're taking up: "How will I know my child will find their vocation?" Read the answer on our website. We'd love to hear yours too, bring your questions, your tired moments, your worries, and we'll lay them under Mary's mantle together. Some will be answered right here in the column, others will become workshop topics at this year's Open House.  Submit your question — always anonymous if you'd like.

Beginning the Year with Intentional Spaces

The Formative Home invites us to look at our homes with fresh eyes this year: the ordered kitchen, the made bed, the corner where the books live. September is the month to start there, not with a full home makeover, but with one space made beautiful on purpose. A clean surface, a candle, a single piece of art at a child's eye level, small signals that this room is where learning and prayer happen, long before a lesson begins. 

Challenge: pick one room or corner this week and make it a little more beautiful, then notice whether your children treat it differently.
