St. Benedict

This Saturday the Church celebrates St. Benedict, the father of Western monasticism and one of the most quietly influential men in history. He didn't set out to save civilization. He set out to pray, to work, and to live in community under a rule of life. And in doing so, his monks preserved learning, cultivated the land, and kept the light of faith burning through centuries of darkness. His motto — ora et labora, pray and work — is not a slogan. It is a way of life. For homeschooling families in the middle of summer, Benedict is the saint who reminds us that order is not rigidity. It is freedom. A home with a rhythm — prayer at set times, meals together, work before play, books before screens — is a home where children learn to govern themselves. You don't need a monastery. You need a rule of life simple enough to keep and steady enough to hold. Start with one thing this week: a fixed time for prayer, a daily chore completed before anything else begins, a rhythm your family can return to when the summer days start to blur. Benedict built something that lasted fifteen hundred years. He started with a cave, a prayer, and a decision to show up every day.
